MAking health resources, services, and information more accessible for the 2s/lgbtqia+ community

Many of the community members the QTHC serves experience challenges accessing health information, resources, and services integral to their health and wellbeing because of institutional barriers. Systemic racism, xenophobia, ableism, settler-colonialism, cissexism, transphobia, heterosexism, and homophobia create these barriers which exclude marginalized folks. This dynamic can seriously threaten the health and wellbeing of individuals and their communities.

The QTHC firmly believes that access to adequate health information, resources, and services is a right and that all community members deserve safe access to healthcare. Our goal is to provide the best support possible to 2S/LGBTQIA+ folks in accessing and navigating healthcare services by providing helpful health information and acting as an advocate for 2S/LGBTQIA+ folks in the Alberta healthcare system.

As the QTHC continues to grow and serve a greater number of 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members, we’ve developed an Accessibility Action Plan to ensure the perspectives of a diverse range of 2S/LGBTQIA+ individuals in Edmonton are included, especially those most vulnerable to barriers to healthcare services and information.

The Accessibility Action Plan is based on findings discovered through various community consultations. Our goals are to explore, define, and enhance access to health services and resources for 2S/LGBTQIA+ people through consultation and inclusion of perspectives of the people this organization is made of, by, and for.

We aim to achieve a reality where all 2S/LGBTQIA+ folks feel able to engage with the QTHC’s education, programming, and services in a safe, inclusive, and meaningful way. This plan and it’s summary document is a starting point to improving accessibility; as we evolve as a community-based organization, our approach to improving accessibility will evolve as well.

Please contact us with any suggestions and feedback for increasing accessibility for all members of the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community.

A more detailed report of these findings can be requested by contacting connect@ourhealthyeg.ca. We ask you respect the integrity of the data provided by our community members and acknowledge the contributions of the QTHC where appropriate.
